Abertay University Empowers Tayside Pupils with Real-World Business Experience

In an inspiring initiative to bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical business skills, Abertay University recently hosted a dynamic business experience session for senior pupils from across Tayside. This event, part of the Young Enterprise Company Programme, provided students with invaluable hands-on experience in entrepreneurship, leadership, and teamwork.

Connecting Classroom Learning with Real-World Business Skills

The interactive session brought together S5 and S6 pupils from Grove Academy, Monifieth High School, and Webster’s High School for a day filled with entrepreneurial challenges and networking opportunities. The event was designed to help students develop essential skills such as problem-solving, creativity, and strategic thinking—qualities that are highly valued in today’s competitive job market.

Dr. Emilee Simmons, Head of Dundee Business School at Abertay University, emphasized the importance of such initiatives: “These sessions give young people a practical understanding of entrepreneurship, teamwork, and problem-solving—skills that are vital in today’s economy. By connecting schools, universities, and industry, we’re helping to build a pipeline of talent that will drive innovation and growth across Scotland.”

A Collaborative Effort to Foster Entrepreneurial Talent

The event was part of a broader collaboration between Young Enterprise, the University of Strathclyde, and other universities across Scotland. This partnership aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of business operations, from product development to market launch. Participants also have the opportunity to earn an SCQF Level 6 qualification, which is equivalent to 30 SCQF points or 21 UCAS points.

Eloise McNeaney, Programme Lead at Young Enterprise, highlighted the significance of these partnerships: “Young Enterprise could not be as successful or impactful without our partnerships with universities across Scotland. We want our programme participants to understand the transferable enterprising skills for life and work that they are developing on the programme (often without realising!) and link them to future careers, industries, and degree pathways.”

Hands-On Learning and Networking Opportunities

The Abertay session included a variety of engaging activities, such as a reflection and planning workshop, an entrepreneurial challenge delivered by Strathclyde Inspire, and a guest speaker presentation by Simon Fraser, Enterprise Officer at Abertay. The day concluded with a networking and competency workshop, where students had the chance to connect with industry professionals from various sectors.

One of the highlights of the event was a speed networking session, which allowed students to interact with professionals and gain insights into different career paths and roles. This exposure to real-world business environments is crucial for helping students make informed decisions about their future careers.

Preparing Students for Future Success

The event took place ahead of the Tayside Trade Fair, where the student businesses showcased their products and services to the wider community. This fair provided an excellent platform for students to apply the skills they had developed during the programme and gain valuable feedback from potential customers.

By participating in such initiatives, students not only enhance their entrepreneurial skills but also build confidence and resilience. These qualities are essential for success in any career path, whether in business, academia, or other fields.
