About

At De Montfort University Leicester (DMU), we know that what you learn in books is just the start. It's our goal to help every student reach their goal, and our supportive and nurturing community of academics, students, and experts will empower our students to realize their dreams.

DMU is a dynamic and inclusive 21st-century university with a history of teaching, training, and developing talent that can be traced back 150 years. Today, DMU continues to build a reputation founded on a clear focus on graduate careers. Our award-winning careers support and employability service, DMU Works, is here to open doors for our students and to help them find their dream careers. This year we received a prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) Award for Outstanding Support for Students in recognition of an initiative delivered by our careers service to help students from ethnic minority groups gain job confidence. Additionally, we were ranked among the best universities in the UK for supporting students to improve their career prospects in the Whatuni Student Choice Awards. In 2021, DMU Works was named Best University Careers/Employability Service at the NUE Awards, which celebrates the best work being done in UK universities.

We offer every student access to a welcoming scholarly environment where they can expand their knowledge, enjoy exciting life experiences and increase their appeal to employers. Our new strategy commits us to discovering gateways of opportunity that empower students, staff, and our community to create a fairer society.

DMU is in the top 10% of institutions recognized by the Times Higher Education's 2020 Impact Ranking league table for our work on the United Nations Strategic Development Goals. We halved our energy-related carbon emissions one year ahead of target, an achievement announced at the 2020 Sustainable Development Goals Conference, and are in the top 50 universities in the world for sustainability in the Times Higher Education rankings.

DMU has a long and prosperous history of assisting individuals through their education and helping them improve their lives. Founded as the Leicester School of Art in 1870, DMU has grown and changed significantly over the years, including transitions like the Leicester Colleges of Art and Technology and Leicester Polytechnic. DMU pride itself on being able to adapt to the times and still provide top-tier education for all who attend. On June 26th, 1992, Leicester Polytechnic officially became De Montfort University. The new name was chosen to better reflect the long-standing relationship between the university and the city of Leicester. The name is in honor of Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester, a key player in medieval history who established the first parliament in 1265.
