The course builds upon a strong and well-established body of research into East Asian media and political cultures. It is designed to extend understandings of the East Asian region by moving beyond the dominant focus on Japan, China and Korea, and by examining the political dimensions of the media in other post-Maoist states. It will address the political and cultural contexts through which global and local media interact in East Asia and the role of the state in mediating and shaping the media in these countries. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on critical understanding of the media and its power to shape politics.
