Chemistry with Cosmetic Science

The University of Reading offers a wide range of courses in cosmetic science. The BA(Hons) in Cosmetic Science is a two year course, which focuses on practical and theoretical skills of applying chemistry to the understanding and manufacture of cosmetics. The course is made up of 5 modules, each lasting 2 terms. The first module is a general introduction to the study of cosmetic chemistry. The second module is a study of the chemistry of lipids and lipids interactions, leading to understanding of the chemistry of skin, hair, and nails. The third module looks at the chemistry of fats, waxes, and surfactants, leading to an understanding of the chemistry of the skin, and how it is affected by these ingredients. The fourth module studies the chemistry of polymers, leading to an understanding of how polymers are applied in cosmetics. The fifth and final module deals with the application of cosmetic chemistry to the manufacturing of beauty products.
