The course is designed to develop the student's ability to understand and evaluate archaeological and anthropological data, and to provide training for those working in archaeology and anthropology. This is a one-year course, and the emphasis is on learning how to read and understand the primary sources (the scientific literature) rather than on the technical skills of field archaeology. The course will consist of a sequence of lectures, seminars and tutorials on a number of topics in archaeology and anthropology, including field archaeology, archaeological and ethnographic methods, and the primary sources used in archaeology and anthropology. The course will also include a period of field research on a topic of the student's choice in a rural or suburban setting. There will be one field visit of approximately one week during the year, and field trips to a variety of archaeological sites are also likely to be included in the timetable. There will be a one-day excursion to the British Museum and other museums in London during the year, and an optional
