The Scottish Literature and History degree program at The University of Edinburgh offers the opportunity to study a range of Scottish writers and historical figures, in a context which is deeply informed by our links with the Scottish national story and our understanding of the European and Atlantic story. We offer a course in Scottish literature, which runs through the history of Scottish literature, from the ancient period and the Gaelic story, through the medieval period and the Renaissance, to modern literature and the twentieth-century. The course also explores the relations between Scotland and other nations and cultures. There also a course in Scottish history, which explores Scotland’s past from the early period, through the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Reformation, to the modern period. Scottish history is seen as a multi-layered, international story, drawing on our history of Scotland and our engagement with the wider world.
