The BA (Hons) English degree offers a comprehensive exploration of themes and concepts across both English literature and language. Spanning over 3,000 years of literary history, we cover everything from classic works by Brontë to the evolution of dialects. You’ll also delve into fascinating topics such as sociolinguistics, bilingualism, child language development, gender, and sexuality.
With the flexibility of our English degree, you have the power to shape your studies and evaluate topics ranging from literary history to language change. In Year 2, you can choose from a variety of modules, including Contemporary American Literature, Modernisms, or Forensic Linguistics.
Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to focus on a single author and conduct an in-depth study of their work within its historical, cultural, and literary context. In the English language, you’ll examine essential aspects such as structure, sound system, history, and ongoing development.
