This degree program delves into the field of special educational needs and disability, drawing on insights from education, psychology, sociology and philosophy. Throughout the course, you'll be encouraged to think critically about the use of labels and categories, and to develop your own personal stance on important issues related to special educational needs and disability. By challenging mainstream approaches to assessment, identification, diagnosis and interventions, you'll explore the role of schools in supporting students with special educational needs.
You'll also examine the historical and current contexts that shape our understanding of special educational needs. Work-based learning opportunities are available at every level of study, giving you the chance to gain valuable hands-on experience in a range of settings. With a focus on adopting a strengths-based approach, you'll be empowered to develop a positive attitude towards disability, recognizing it as a defining aspect of a person's identity rather than a mere "disability".
