University of Huddersfield Students Excel in Ghana Hospital Knowledge Exchange
Six advanced practice apprenticeship students from the University of Huddersfield have been lauded for their exceptional performance during a recent knowledge exchange visit to Ghana. The students, accompanied by lecturers and a consultant geriatrician, spent 10 days at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), working alongside Ghanaian colleagues and participating in various healthcare activities.
Students Praised as Incredible Ambassadors
The students, all enrolled in the Advanced Practice (Apprenticeship) MSc program, were described as “incredible ambassadors” for the university. They worked across different areas of the hospital, including emergency and maternity departments, and took part in health clinics at rural health centers and a local orphanage.
Charlotte Barker, one of the accompanying lecturers, praised the students’ performance: “They were out of their comfort zone, but they acquitted themselves incredibly well and were an absolute credit to our university.”
A True Knowledge Exchange
The visit was designed as a two-way knowledge exchange, with both Huddersfield and KNUST students and staff learning from each other. The Huddersfield students joined teaching ward rounds and attended lectures on public health issues like Mpox and sickle cell disease. In turn, they led discussions on compassionate care and patient-centered communication, areas where KNUST expressed a desire to improve.
Angela Windle, another lecturer on the trip, emphasized the importance of this exchange: “We wanted our students to learn from their experience, and KNUST UHS were really keen that it was a knowledge exchange between the two of us.”
Students’ Reflections on the Experience
Chloe Gough, one of the students who visited Ghana, shared her insights: “It reinforced a fundamental truth within clinical practice: a thorough history and active listening often lead you to the diagnosis long before any investigation is ordered.” She expressed admiration for the Ghanaian clinicians who deliver exceptional care with minimal resources, relying on skill, intuition, and education.
Gough also reflected on the privilege of diagnostic tests in the UK: “Ghana reminded me that the diagnostic tests we rely on at home are a privilege, tools designed to support and confirm our clinical judgement, not replace it.”
Building Lasting Relationships
The visit not only provided valuable learning experiences but also helped build lasting relationships between the two institutions. The Huddersfield team met with various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Health and the Nursing and Midwifery Council, to discuss developing Ghana’s nursing workforce, particularly in advanced practice.
The success of this knowledge exchange visit highlights the University of Huddersfield’s commitment to global health education and its students’ ability to represent the institution with professionalism and respect in international settings.
