Newcastle University Student Fund Impact 2025: Supporting 27,000 Students Across Three Campuses

Overview of the Newcastle University Student Fund

The Newcastle University Student Fund is a dedicated allocation of alumni and supporter generosity, designed to remove financial barriers and enhance the university experience for every student. Since the fund’s launch in 2021, a total of more than £1.5 million has been donated, supporting over 27,000 students across our campuses in Newcastle, Singapore, and Malaysia.

How Donations Translate into Student Support

Every contribution, whether a one‑time gift or a recurring monthly donation, is carefully directed toward initiatives that deliver the greatest impact on the student body. The Fund’s portfolio ranges from bursaries that cover club and society fees to scholarships that ease living costs and tuition, to practical resources such as an on‑campus calculator bank.

Key Areas Impacted by the Fund

Bursaries for Clubs and Societies

In the past year, 131 bursaries were awarded for participation in more than 260 student clubs and societies. These bursaries cover registration costs for activities that otherwise require students to pay out‑of‑pocket fees, from archery and brass band to Model United Nations and Zumba.

Such engagement is crucial for building confidence, expanding social circles, and managing academic stress. One standout story is that of Jacob, a 2025 medical graduate, who credited the Fund with allowing him to try sports like powerlifting and taekwondo – activities that contributed to improved mental health during a demanding year of study.

Academic Resources: Calculator Bank

Financial barriers often mean students arrive at examinations without necessary tools. To address this, the Fund secured funds to create a library loan service comprising 100 scientific calculators. This initiative ensures that all students have access to required equipment during assessment periods, fostering equity and better academic outcomes.

Academic and Career Advancement Opportunities

Student travel and networking events are a cornerstone of the Fund’s impact. For example, 50 business‑school and arts students visited London in spring 2025, meeting with employers such as HSBC and PwC. The interaction provided industry insights and opened doors to graduate schemes – the experience in which MSc Business Analytics student Anita highlighted the value of “meeting alumni and professionals who share invaluable advice.”

Inclusive Community Support

Funding was also dedicated to the Belonging in Engineering Network (BEN), a space for Black and Global Majority engineering students. With the Fund’s backing, BEN members gained access to the Association for Black and Minority Ethnic Engineers and received mentoring, coaching, and inspirational talks – a vital step toward campus belonging and career readiness.

Spotlight on Student Success Stories

Social Engagement and Well-being

The financial relief extends beyond clubs. Students such as the 2025 cohort’s Model United Nations members and the BME engineering community noted increased participation rates and morale after the bursaries were awarded.

Media and Journalism Excellence

The Fund also supported the travel of six students to the Student Publication Association National Conference. Their presence strengthened Newcastle University’s media reputation, culminating in a Best Sports Section award for the student newspaper, “The Courier.” Additionally, the Student Spotlight Awards concept was introduced, awarding monthly £50 vouchers to inspirational students across all campuses, celebrating achievements such as Eloise’s “The Sticky Note” blogging platform and Syaeerhan’s leadership of the SIT Project Youth.

Alumnus Contributions Beyond Monetary Giving

Scholarships and Legacy Fund

Alumni have provided approximately 400 scholarships in the last academic year, covering tuition fee discounts and living costs. For instance, Ariana, a second‑year physics student, received the Cairns Family Scholarship, enabling her to attend conferences and participate in societies without financial strain. Etienne, a third‑year English student, benefited from a scholarship that covered athletics kit and travel for national competitions.

Volunteer and Mentorship Initiatives

Supporters also volunteer time as mentors, tutors, and event organisers, creating a network of practical guidance for students. The Alumni Achievement Awards and inspirational alumni stories further amplify the culture of giving back.

How to Contribute to the Student Fund

One‑time vs Recurring Support

Donors may choose a single donation or set up a recurring monthly contribution. Monthly donors, for example, contribute a small amount that can add up to a significant annual sum, sustaining the Fund’s capacity to fund multiple initiatives over time.

Practical Ways to Make a Difference

  • Donate online in as little as £10 to fund a club membership or help a student travel to an industry event.
  • Leverage the alumni network to promote the Fund amongst peers and colleagues.
  • Volunteer for committee roles that help identify high‑impact projects.

Future Vision for the Student Fund

Expanding Reach Across Global Campuses

Plan to increase funding allocations to support activities specific to each campus, ensuring that the unique needs of students in Newcastle, Singapore, and Malaysia receive proportional resources. Future grants will also target emerging technology societies and interdisciplinary research groups.
