Overview of the 25/26 NCL in Action Programme
The Newcastle community has received a fresh call to engagement with the launch of NCL in Action 25/26, a cross‑institutional initiative designed to address the high‑impact issues shaping our world in 2025 and beyond. Broadly focused on the themes of geopolitical change, technology disruption, climate stress and economic uncertainty, the programme invites alumni, students, staff and corporate partners to discuss, learn and co‑create solutions that move from analysis to action.
Almost 300 participants signed up for the inaugural launch, and the first events were held in Newcastle, New York and London. In each city the programme has worked with partners such as Lloyds Banking Group and local academic and business leaders to stage panels, fireside chats and networking sessions.
Key Themes and Panel Discussions
Throughout the summer and fall, experts have tackled the most urgent questions our societies confront. Each session combines rigorous scholarship with pragmatic business insight, finally linking back to career pathways for alumni.
Geopolitical Shifts: From Uncertainty to Innovation
During the opening fireside chat, historian Professor Paul Kennedy—Newcastle alumnus and Yale professor—examined how the traditional balance of power is shifting in 2025. He suggested that regions historically perceived as “stable” are experiencing undercurrent disruptions, offering new research and advisory opportunities for policymakers and analysts.
Technology, AI and Ethical Horizons
Rob McCargow, Technology Impact Leader at PwC UK, illustrated how AI systems are reframing productivity and risk management. The discussion highlighted data privacy, algorithmic bias and the importance of upskilling in digital ethics—a trend that motivates the upcoming CPD modules on responsible technology.
Climate Policy and Sustainability Finance
With climate change intensifying, the panel included economic advisers and environmental journalists who debated how businesses can align profitability with carbon reduction commitments. This conversation is directly linked to the “Climate Finance” practicum that will be offered in the next academic term.
Strategic Leadership in Times of Turbulence
Experts from the UK Ministry of Defence and British Embassy, combined with business coaches, explored the skillsets required to navigate governance challenges and lead diverse teams across borders. Their insights feed into the alumni leadership tracks set up in partnership with Lloyds.
