Attend Joanna Scanlan’s Special Screening of Joy at Bangor University

Celebrate the Legacy of Sir Robert Edwards

Bangor University invites its community to a unique event on 12 November: a free screening of the BAFTA‑winning film Joy, followed by a live Q&A with award‑winning actor Joanna Scanlan. The program honours Sir Robert Edwards, a native of Bangor and a pioneer in in‑vitro fertilisation (IVF) whose work changed millions of lives.

Why the Screening Matters

Sir Robert Edwards earned his Zoology degree at Bangor in 1951. Decades later he partnered with scientist Jean Purdy and surgeon Patrick Steptoe to develop IVF, culminating in the birth of Louise Joy Brown in 1978 – the first “test‑tube baby.” The film follows that story from the perspective of nurse‑embryologist Jean Purdy, highlighting curiosity, perseverance and collaboration. By watching Joy, you will see the intersection of science, creativity and personal dedication that defines Bangor’s culture.

Joanna Scanlan: A Homecoming

Raised in North Wales, Scanlan’s parents both earned degrees from Bangor. She returns with a special invitation from Netflix to host the event and offers insight into bringing a scientific narrative to life on screen. Her remarks celebrate the university’s impact on her career and emphasize the mutual respect between academia and the arts.
